How to Make Elephant Toothpaste (Classic Science Experiment)

Elephant toothpaste is one of the most dramatic and satisfying home science experiments — a rapid foaming reaction that erupts out of a bottle in seconds. It looks impressive but is genuinely simple and safe (in its basic version) to set up.

What You’ll Need (Basic/Kid-Safe Version)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Place the empty bottle on your tray — this experiment overflows, so set up somewhere easy to clean, ideally outdoors or on a surface that can get wet.
  2. Pour the hydrogen peroxide into the bottle.
  3. Add a good squirt of dish soap and a few drops of food coloring directly into the bottle, and give it a gentle swirl to mix.
  4. In a separate small cup, mix the yeast packet with the warm water and stir for about 30 seconds until it’s dissolved.
  5. Pour the yeast mixture into the bottle and step back immediately — the reaction starts fast.
  6. Watch the foam erupt out of the bottle top in a rapid, satisfying stream.

The Science Behind It

This is a genuine chemical reaction, not just a visual trick. Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) naturally breaks down into water and oxygen gas over time, but very slowly on its own. The yeast acts as a catalyst — a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being consumed itself — dramatically accelerating the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen gas.

The oxygen gas gets trapped in the dish soap, creating all those foamy bubbles, and the sheer volume of gas produced so quickly is what forces the foam to erupt out of the bottle rather than just gently bubble.

Why It’s Called “Elephant Toothpaste”

The name comes purely from the visual — the thick, foamy stream erupting out resembles an oversized tube of toothpaste being squeezed out, at a scale that jokingly suggests it’s meant for an elephant.
